Junichi Nakahara (1916-1983) was prominent artist well know for his water color paintings, illustrations, fashion design, interior decor and doll making. In the 1920s and 1930s his illustrations of young girls with big eyes were very famous and you can see the art deco influence on his work. The style of his illustrations are typical of Japanese anime and manga drawings that are popular today and he is considered a forerunner of manga art.
I recently ran across a bright and cheerful store dedicated to his work in Hiro-o where I couldn’t resist picking up a few post cards (photo below). The store offers everything from bookmarks to bags, books, and umbrellas so you are bound to find some great souvenirs or even some art to take home with you. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
Hiro-o is located on the Hibiya Line of Tokyo Metro. Hiro-o is the center of the ex-pat community in Tokyo primarily due to the abundance of embassies located in the vicinity.
To get to the shop take a right from station exit#1 and then another quick right at the intersection. The store will be located about a block down on your right.
